A little bit about Sohum...

With all of your blessings Sohum has grown into a wonderful young boy... for that we are really thankful. Through our days of teasing him that Elvis wrote 'Devil in disguise about him' and begging him to join us to visit family OR get groceries OR really just step out of the house and having to agree exactly when we will be back here we are. Like a butterfly Sohum appears ready to come out of a chrysalis. Some of you have been a close part of Sohum's growing up and because of us moving here some of you have been guiding and blessing him and us from a distance. We are so grateful for the support of our family and friends and feel blessed to have you all in our lives.
We are also grateful for the support of our family and friends and feel blessed to have you all in our lives. !
We look forward to sharing this occasion with you !

May 06: He's here

Sohum was born in Pittsburgh. Like we'd find out later Sohum " wants to do, what he wants to do" and the rest is history...

2007

10 June: Started School

Sohum (Somu) was a very competitive child. From wanting to be the first in any race, that sometimes only he knew that he was competing in :) , to always volunteer to help, Sohum was a natual leader as a child.

Growing Up

It's no wonder to us that Sohum has turned out to be as sociable as he now is. He gave an impression of being a shy kid. Liked to wear oversized clothes and enjoyed, really ENJOYED, his video games. He started developing interest acoss a broad range of subjects, wide enough to be interesting. The tough part was when he started fact-checking Dad. We are told that he's "quite a character" in school ( we hope that they mean this in a good way)

Happy Times

We've has some fun times together. Somu was a very co-operative traveller, even though he always wanted to do his thing. That explains why we cherish the 20 pictures over the last 18 years with him. Sharing a few ..

2022 - He'll turn 18 soon!

PANDEMIC, AHEAD OR BEHIND US

So Sohum's Dadu & Dadi were finally able to travel back from India 08'22, after having spent the better part of pandemic in India. They'd gone there to travel for 6 months, buthad to stay a while as inernation travel was curtailed.

Nearly as soon as they landed in Pittsburgh, Dadi started planting the seed to getting the Yagnopavit done. "Khabar pagah kya baniy, Panas paeth cha barosa..." ( who knows what will happen tomorrow, life is so uncertain .. ). With Jyotsna (Sohum's mom), the found a willing partner and a cheerleader. They were unstoppable

How "kyah chuk vanan" (what do you say?) became "che kya chuy karun, ye che saen kaam" ( this is not your work, but ours) We do not know but here we are!

Feb 20, 22 July: Dadi put her foot down!

Sohum has been won over to participate in the Yagnopavit ceremony on an agreement that the he gets to keep his hair.
Ahh what a battle, Mom (Jyotsna) can solve international conflicts now :) Till the time we get our videos up take a look at what the ceremony looks like !

Livun - Clean up & Getting ready

Livun is a ceremony that needs the boy's ( mekhal-i- maharaz) families to clean the house. An asuspicious date is picked for the Livun ceremony. Traditionally the Kashmiri houses were mud huts and on Livun these mud floors were made to look new by applying fresh mud and water mixture on them. Now it is more about cleaning the house to get it ready for the celebrations. The married women in the families attend this ceremony, and cook waer. The parents of boy then gift these relatives with some cash or clothing and so on.

Divagaun

The next event is Devgoan. A small havan is performed to invite Gods, Goddesses and deities to be present and seek their blessings for the Yagnopavit. The boy’s head used to be clean shaved leaving the Choti or Chogh, but nowadays he may just get a haircut. He is bathed (kani-shran) with a mixture of yogurt, milk, honey in water, and dressed in new clothes. Married ladies from the immediate family (excluding girls married into other families) wear Taek-taal and Nariwon, most likely to identify them among the crowd (it is like the organizers of a function wearing badges), besides wearing new sarees. A kind of ‘Kichdi’ called Vár with walnuts and Munga-vaer are prepared and highly sought after. In Kashmir, the Pooja and Havan for Yagnopavit used to start in the evening of Devgoan and continue the whole of next day. A certain mantra was recited 10,000 times. Outside of Kashmir, this step is often abbreviated and the entire process takes only 2-3 hours!

Mehandiraat - Maenzraat

A Kashmiri Mekhala has three aspects: social, ritualistic and religious. Mehndi-raat, also celebrated during weddings, is purely a social event conducted in the evening. Besides application of Mehndi and a vegetarian feast, there is traditional song and dance till the early hours of morning. Isbundh (a seed that gives a fragrant smoke) is burnt in Kangris at all the functions!

Yagnopavit - Mekhal

Yagnopavit is a joint word made of two fragments - Yagna and Upvitam. Yagna means a sacrificial ceremony and Upvitam means sacred thread. Therefore, Yagnopavit is a ceremony where sacrifices are pledged and a sacred thread is worn as a reminder of that pledge. Upanayana is also a joint word made from Upa and Nayan. Upanayana means first step towards the guidance to knowledge which includes spiritual knowledge. Yagnopavit is symbolic of the initiation of a person into performing his threefold-duties to the household, the devtas and to his pitras (deceased elders). The three strands of Yagnopavit represent the manifestation of Brahman as Srishti, Sthithi and Vinasha. The knot in the middle, the Brahmagand, represents the formless-Brahman, the pure form of energy which pervades all. The strands also illustrate the fact that everything in the universe emerge from, and then merge back with Brahman....
